Help with Managed Funds

Managed Funds is the term used to describe a range of investment vehicles with one common characteristic - the manager makes the individual investment decisions.

We can help you select from a wide range of managers and funds that will suit your individual requirements.

There are five main types of managed fund

  • Portfolio Investment Entities (PIEs) including KiwiSaver
  • Listed Investment Companies (LICs)
  • Group Investment Funds
  • Unit Trusts
  • Superannuation Funds
  • Insurance Bonds

These days PIEs and LICs are usually the best option. For some people a managed fund is preferred to making individual investments themselves. You are essentially paying someone else to manage your investments for you.

Some funds are specialised and only invest in one type of asset, for example only New Zealand shares. Other funds are diversified investing across all asset classes, local and overseas. And then of course there is everything in between. A huge variety of different managers using various approaches to trying to achieve the best returns.

We have clients who are happy investing directly in the New Zealand sharemarket. They select which company shares they want to buy and decide when to sell. But they also want a portion of their money invested in overseas sharemarkets and don't feel they have the knowledge and resources to invest directly themselves so place that portion of their funds with a manager to invest it for them.

Other clients have little or no interest in making individual investment decisions and place all their investments in managed funds. It is really up to the individuals needs.

We have a number of very good fund managers in New Zealand and are lucky to be able to easily access a number of Australian fund managers. Many of whom have funds structured as PIEs for New Zealand investors.
